While grinding can be just a way to artificially make game longer, often it lets you adjust difficulty, giving you the choice of how much you want to level up and upgrade gear. At best it can even be alternative game mechanic to advance; for example you can have doors that you can either find a key to or get a spell (at certain level) to open. So in that sense I think grinding can be good game design.

And games inevitably have repetition. When the gameplay is simple but great, it effectively becomes grinding, but that's not a problem.
