I do think it's fun to look at the evolution from a Famicom launch title like Donkey Kong (83, port from an 81 arcade game), to SMB (85), to SMB3 (87), but for me the biggest jump was still in gen 4.
Arcade ports make the debate muckier, though. Like, the person above mentioned Tekken and Virtua Fighter, comparing them to SF2, but the SNES got 3 or 4 different versions of SF2, but it also got a port of Street Fighter Alpha 2, which used a newer Capcom board on arcade, and already looked much better than SF2. Genesis meanwhile received it's very own port of Virtua Fighter through the 32X addon.
