I have carts that are forty years old with original batteries that still retain saves. I have CD's that are from the mid-80's that play perfectly. I have PS1 games, PS2 games, Blu-Rays... they all play perfectly still. The only discs I've ever had that ended up not working were second-hand ones, so I assume it's down to storage. If someone keeps their stuff in an attic, car, garage etc, then yeah. It's going to break down. Otherwise, these studies, at least in my experience, are all wrong.
