People often make funny conclusions from these splits that disregard a ton of information. They'd look at the 80% digital rate and deduce from this that 80% of gamers "don't care about physical" lol.
If every gamer buys 80% of their games digitally, this would actually confirm that 100% of them do care about physical and want options even if digital is their general preference. This "80%" may take into account microtransactions, bundles, f2p, and games not available in physical format. Last I heard from Chris Dring, the average Playstation single player game (available physically and digitally) had a digital ratio of 55%. This is despite the existence of a digital only PS5 and bundles skewing data towards digital.
Sony's bet is that they can transition more players fully to digital than they lose. I think this move is more dangerous in the long run than supporting PC with tentpole 1st party titles. It's just terrible for both consumers and the Playstation brand.
