However you look at it, it's a piss poor value when you can build PS5Pro equivalent (with smaller storage than PS5Pro though) for less than GabeCube price. |
I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying that there are other factors other than GPU/GPU/RAM to consider as contributors to the high price of the system.
And also yeah, being slower than a base PS5 while being a fair bit more expensive than a PS5 Pro is ridiculous.
The Steam Machine 2 basically has landed in no man's land. It's too expensive and underpowered to rival consoles and it's the same but also too closed (you can't upgrade the CPU nor GPU) to attrract PC gamers. It could hardly be in a worse position.

Hardware Unboxed made a video and used GamersNexus results to make tables comparing performance of the Steam Machine 2 with other GPUs, and the 9060XT offers around 60% more pwerformance. And that's the 8GB model that no one recomends. So yeah, if Valve had gone with a 9060XT and charged $150 or even $200 more, people would be far more into it.
But it is what it is.

It's a dick move, but that has become a common practice from many publishers.
At least the base game is not $100 like some expected.

For many people, building their own Steam Machine will likely be a better option than buying Valve's machine. The major downsides I can think of will be the bigger size of the device, the CEC aspect that, francky speaking, many won't care about, and the fact that you'll have to configurate it yourself.
As for the Steam Deck 2, they should wait until the AI bubble bursts or deflates a little before launching it. Valve can certainly make one that comes with a noticeable perfrmance jump, but the cost right now would be too high.
Better focus on the Frame.
