Of couse I agree the PS3 is presented as a multi-media games console which can be expanded into a computer with keyboard & mouse, etc (it's being used for scientific research though!). But the Amiga 500 was similar, only instead of a joystick or gamepad did come with a built-in keyboard and mouse. The Amiga 500 was a game focussed home computer without a harddrive by default, various expansions were optional.
Sony is much more powerful and has far more management expertise than Commodore ever had (Commodore bought the Amiga technology from the real technology pioneers, Amiga Corp which disguised their true intentions by creating joysticks and such, one was the Amiga Powerboard with joystick, which was a balance board to play surfing or ski games, similar ideas as to what Nintendo currently provides with Wii Fit).
I think the PS3 will still be around 5 years from now, many more years. And I think the platform will demonstrate massive gains in terms of software utilizing the hardware.
