Single, standalone purchase? PC, back in '95, equivalent of around $3000, current USD. Absolutely worth it, since games that I wanted to play were only available on PC.
One game, but multiple purchases? D&D 5e. All the books I have put together were around $800, but if I count all additional stuff as well, it goes to around $5000 - this is mostly due to minis, which in itself are not that expensive, but having them painted by someone who's good at it is pricey. Was it worth it? Yeah - I fell off actual tabletop RPG play back in early 90s, and only got back to play it (well, DM it) more intensively with 5e around 2016/7, so I'm happy it got me back in the hobby. 5e is not worth it though (I haven't been running it in years, except if someone really insist on it, and then only one-shot), but good thing is those minis are reusable in a lot of other games, and most of the books can be stripped for maps and encounters as well.
