If an AI car kills a child running out between parked cars, impossible to avoid, people will ban AI cars... It can be made fool proof, sensors everywhere, parked cars stay actively monitoring and connected. But since when do humans every put safety over saving a few bucks.
But I see smart traffic lights are finally starting to be realized. SCATS and TIMMS

I hope it comes down to my town as well (I live 80km from London) as our traffic lights only make the daily construction gridlock much worse. So we had a human operator stand next to the control box trying to adjust the timings during rush hour lol.
Anyway good plan to optimize traffic flows with smart traffic signalling. Not sure if you need AI for that, the problem is mostly counting cars and not keeping people waiting for nothing, as well as checking if the destination lanes are not clogged to prevent gridlock. A simple rule based program with traffic cams to identify traffic can do it.
Ugh SCATS is based on Windows, good luck with that lol.
