Wouldn't that invite mice, snakes, mosquitoes and other unwanted guests? 

Well can't have half of nature. I live in the Netherlands, so no snakes or mosquitoes really. I have most of my garden just growing and it attracts a lot of bees, butterflies, birds and the occasional cat roaming around.
