The second part of the Thursday gaming news:

Marvel Rivals producer says 'it's not the time' for original heroes, the devs are more concerned with its UI
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/marvel-rivals-producer-says-its-not-the-time-for-original-heroes-the-devs-are-more-concerned-with-its-ui/
Marvel Rivals' roster is growing rapidly, and with two heroes per season, one for each half, NetEase is quickly running through the list of fan-favourite superheroes. Luckily, Marvel has more than enough to go around, which means NetEase can hold off on making any original heroes for the time being.
While NetEase does have the greenlight to make original heroes for Marvel Rivals, producer Danny Koo simply says that "it's not the time" for that right now as they already have "so many" known heroes lined up at least until season 8 (via IGN).

Marathon is rescheduling its frustrating endgame, but you're still against the clock: 'No schedule is perfect, but we're here to listen and learn'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/marathon-is-rescheduling-its-frustrating-endgame-but-youre-still-against-the-clock-no-schedule-is-perfect-but-were-here-to-listen-and-learn/
Marathon's endgame is great. There's the intense PvPvE puzzling of Cryo Archive, including a boss fight against the Compiler for unique gear, and then there's Ranked, which gives you the chance to loot and shoot your way up the ladder.
(...)
"We’ve heard your feedback," Bungie states in a post on X, "having Ranked and Cryo Archive overlap can make it difficult to decide where to spend your time and hard-earned loot."
With this in mind, Bungie is changing the schedule for both modes ahead of their second appearance.

Fortnite producer asks for patience as developers 'pick up the pieces' after massive layoffs: 'We cannot even fully understand what kind of impacts this will have on the game for the rest of the year and likely beyond'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/battle-royale/fortnite-producer-asks-for-patience-as-developers-pick-up-the-pieces-after-massive-layoffs-we-cannot-even-fully-understand-what-kind-of-impacts-this-will-have-on-the-game-for-the-rest-of-the-year-and-likely-beyond/
Yesterday's layoff of more than 1,000 employees at Epic Games was driven in part by behind-the-scenes issues with Fortnite: Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said that "despite Fortnite remaining one of the most successful games in the world, we've had challenges delivering consistent Fortnite magic with every season." Very roughly, 20% of Epic's workforce was let go—the studio said just over 4,000 people remained at Epic following the layoff—and in the wake of that very deep cut, Fortnite producer Robby Williams is asking for patience while developers "pick up the pieces" and try to figure out what comes next.

Infamous World of Warcraft guild exploits its way to a world first in new Midnight raid until Blizzard says its instant 300 million damage doesn't count

The first World of Warcraft Midnight raid race is on and Blizzard has already had to disqualify one group of players for breaking the rules.
While players from around the world race to gear up and take down the boss Chimaerus in the recently released Dreamrift raid, a guild known as RAoV QA Strikes Back walked right in and took first place using exploits. Their names went up on Blizzard's hall of fame list before being removed a few hours later.
>> And a player has found that it costs 25 gold more for them per dungeon to use their mitigation (link).

Arc Raiders players aren't happy with the Flashpoint update's direction as Embark drops a teaser showing the Shredder escape from Stella Montis: 'Shredders are the new Arc aren’t they'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/arc-raiders-players-arent-happy-with-the-flashpoint-updates-direction-as-embark-drops-a-teaser-showing-the-shredder-escape-from-stella-montis-shredders-are-the-new-arc-arent-they/
Arc Raiders' upcoming Flashpoint update launches on March 31, less than a week from now. For this Embark has promised players a new map condition, arc threat, player project, and a Scrappy update. Despite being just days away we haven't heard too much about the free update, with the latest detail drop teasing the migration of Shredders from Stella Montis.
(...)
In fact, many players aren't that happy about this update. It's not because they can be annoying as all hell to deal with, being finicky bastards that turn the hallways of Stella Montis into a Saw trap. Instead players are worried that this will count towards the promise of a new arc in the Flashpoint update.

Star Wars Zero Company devs said 'there were some fights' about its story-centric squadmates suffering permadeath, but accepting that 'Star Wars is about loss' made the game stronger
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/star-wars-zero-company-devs-said-there-were-some-fights-about-its-story-centric-squadmates-suffering-permadeath-but-accepting-that-star-wars-is-about-loss-made-the-game-stronger/
Our hands-on preview of Star Wars Zero Company might've left us convinced that it's more than just Star Wars XCOM, but just like with clone troopers and bounty hunters, there's clearly some crucial DNA being shared. As with XCOM, Zero Company's rogue padawans and plucky astromechs will risk permadeath whenever they take the field.
While permadeath provides some high stakes for Zero Company's heavier narrative focus, some—like Zero Company narrative lead Aaron Contreras—initially thought the stakes would be too high. But in an interview with PC Gamer, Contreras said he and the writing team ultimately accepted that it made for stronger Star Wars storytelling.

Dying Light: The Beast's new mode means the zombies you kill won't respawn… but neither will all the loot you need to survive
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/dying-light-the-beasts-new-mode-means-the-zombies-you-kill-wont-respawn-but-neither-will-all-the-loot-you-need-to-survive/
It always felt a little odd to me in Dying Light: The Beast that Kyle Crane could arrive in the little town of Castor Woods, spend all his spare time stomping and slashing thousand zombies into goop… and have essentially no effect on anything.
(...)
Until now. A free update to Dying Light: The Beast called Restored Land adds an interesting twist to Kyle's zombie parkour adventure. In this new mode, if you kill a zombie, it stays dead. Forever. Clear a building and it'll stay cleared. Wipe out the monsters in dark zones, hives, and convoys, and they'll never come back. Finally, Kyle's zombie-stomping boots have a permanent effect on the world.
Here's the tough part of the deal, though: while those dead zeds won't respawn, neither will all the loot Kyle uses to craft gear, weapons, and supplies. That little shop a block from Town Hall you'd crouch-slide into every day to fill your pockets with resources? You can only raid that store once. After that, it stays empty. Killing every zombie on the map just got a bit harder, huh?

Final Fantasy 14's Japanese age rating gets a bump, and it's all because of screenshots
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/mmo/final-fantasy-14s-japanese-age-rating-gets-a-bump-and-its-all-because-of-screenshots/
Final Fantasy 14's had its age rating in Japan increased—and it might be because people can't stop taking sexy pictures of their catgirls.
Alright, that's not literally the reason, but it's potentially a root cause. In a recent blog post, Square Enix explained that the long-standing MMO would be increasing its age rating—which is called CERO in Japan—from CERO C to CERO D.
