@firebush03 Get yourself a SuperstationOne and possibly a disc drive to go with it. It has several advantages over software emulators and original hardware. First off, it can connect to ANY display, including CRTs (For a flatscreen it does all the upscaling for you internally and it is perfect!). Second, it plays games at a ridiculous level of accuracy that makes regular software emulators look bad. Third it can also play games from any system before Dreamcast, including many arcade titles. Finally, it will output 480p, for all your PS1 games, to a CRT. That is HUGE because the phosphor glow of a CRT makes 480p look amazing. Especially on a high TVL computer monitor, PVM, or BVM.

As for suggestions, click on my wishlist or my collection profiles on pricecharting.com. Then click the consoles dropdown and hit PS1.

The Crash Bandicoot and Spyro trilogies are essential.
The Wipeout games are also great.

Original hardware/games are the way to go in my opinion for that authentic feel, though the problem is you'll need a decent adaptor for a modern TV.

That is very true. RetroRGB.com has lots of good information on what adapters to use. I use a Scart RGB cable from StoneAgeGamer. Avoid Pound Cables and other cheap $20 scalers. They suck. Either output to a CRT or get the Rad2X cables.

My honest advice is to skip PS1 and go straight to PS2

Most of early 3D games did not age well at all. Getting a expensive piece of hardware and original discs only to play few games seems a huge waste of money. Look for collections and re releases on PS5, many publishers issues ports that are much less expensive than buying the original discs

There's still around 80 PS1 games that did age well. You have to focus on the RPGs and 2D games.

Updated list! Thanks again all. Seems Final Fantasy is a clear winner across three games… but lots of really good ideas here, and many games I’ve never heard of before. Now I’ve just gotta figure out a way to play these games… I don’t own a PC. The only way I’ve heard as being a really solid emulator would be on XBSX. Can anyone attest?

Keep giving me game names!

A cheap raspberry pi runs PS1 games well.  Not sure if it plays all games, but it works.  takes a little bit to set it up, but not hard.

That is literally one of the worst ways to play PS1 games. Cheap emulation devices like that are not accurate at all. Go play a simple golf game with a meter, ala Mario Golf. Then try it on one of those emulation devices. You'll notice the horrible input lag. And the sound is often off. Especially on Sega emulators.

@firebush03 if you're considering pirating these games, please don't. Don't be part of the problem. There are plenty of ways to purchase and experience PS1 games legally, whether digitally on PS3, PS4, PS5, and PSV, or physically on the original hardware. Some of the best PS1 games are also available via modern collections, like Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, and Castlevania Requiem.

As others have said piracy of old games is fine.

I support emulation because most emulators improve game graphics vastly. If you want to be legit, buy the game and create an ISO and play it on emulator.

A lot of emulators don't run these old games accurately. And as for improving graphics vastly, just use a proper upscaler. https://retrorgb.com/upscalers.html
