So imo, Bungie is making Marathon have even more of a niche audience than it already was.

They just announced their seasonal model, and the number of resets each season is honestly pretty staggering.
-All Unlocked Gear
-Contract Progression
-Faction Progression
-Player Level

You'll get to keep things like cosmetics, titles, and codex unlocks (story and lore), but that's it. So if you're a casual player, you're gonna unlock some things, but then you'll lose it when the next season rolls around.

Bungie says this will allow the game to still feel dangerous and make loot feel meaningful, but honestly, how can loot feel meaningful if I know I'm going to lose it all?

Maybe it's because I'm too new to Extraction Shooters, but at least in Arc Raiders, that kind of reset is optional, not mandatory. It's basically viewed as Prestige mode in Call of Duty.

This lines Marathon to be catered towards the hardcore crowd. The dedicated ones that will do the grind, knowing there's not much time before losing everything. Titles are a big chase in Destiny 2, and it looks like Bungie will carry those into Marathon, but idk if I'll be able to grind Marathon the way I did Destiny. Especially knowing I won't be keeping anything outside of titles and lore.

you lose your equipped loot just from dying, being disconnected (so you aren't cheating before dying) and from failing to extract from the map in time (20 mins I believe).

Like, you can go into a run with some of your best equipped weapons, only to die to another player. That's your stuff gone.

Wiping the loot from players each season is to prevent players from constantly getting stronger and stronger making the game impossible for new players. A wipe outs everyone on the same playing field except for your institutional knowledge.

This is a good thing... Loot is not that important in the game. It's one of the first things you'll learn when you begin playing.

Well yeah, that’s pointing out the obvious lol. I’ve put nearly 100 hours into Arc Raiders, so I’m aware of how the basic extraction shooter gameplay works. The biggest issue pertains to the faction resets to where you’ll constantly be starting over in levels of gear. Loses a lot of the appeal to grind.

Looting is literally what drives extraction shooters. Why do you think you go into a match? To just chill? lol no, you go in to get valuable loot (the thing that causes the stakes to survive a match to be so high) so that you’re able to complete contracts and level up, and get stronger. No doubt for the endgame raid and ranked mode.

I’ll need to see how the endgame is handled to see if the grind every season is worth it.
