Why are they mutually exclusive?
Actually, passive and interactive entertainment probably are mutualy exclusive. Games that think they're movies tend to do neither very well. Where is the artistic integrity in trying to ape another medium, instead of letting video games become their own? Painters, musicians, writers, and filmmakers don't define themselves in terms of other media, and game makers shouldn't either. Don't force a round peg into a square hole.
