The problem is that Nintendo simply cannot get out of the 80's mindset that videogames are meant to be "fun". I'm sick and tired of developers focusing on creating "fun" experiences on the Wii and in return sacrificing their artistic integrity amidst this peer pressure to be "FUN". Fun is FINE, but it shouldn't be the sole direction and focus the industry basks in.

You sir, disgust me. What's a game if it's not fun? An interactive movie or book? A competitive sport? Honestly, fun should be the sole direction and focus of the industry, though quality is welcome as well.

You hit the nail on the head with the bolded.

Read this article for why video games need not always be "fun".

If video games are to ever reach the high art status of famous writers, philosophy journals, great cinema or painting then they need to let go of this ridiculous notion that a game must be "fun" rather than have artistic integrity, message and depth.

Why are they mutually exclusive?

Actually, passive and interactive entertainment probably are mutualy exclusive. Games that think they're movies tend to do neither very well. Where is the artistic integrity in trying to ape another medium, instead of letting video games become their own? Painters, musicians, writers, and filmmakers don't define themselves in terms of other media, and game makers shouldn't either. Don't force a round peg into a square hole.
