They could have left the studio be independent and spent that money to fund more game that their player base have been ripping them a new one and asking for. This whole GAAS obsession they have and everything to do with it has amassed massive hate from the gaming community (just look at the new horizon online game they announced), you best believe the internet will celebrate when they see it go down in flames plus the fact that HAVENS Fairgame$ project is already hated and are already thrown in as another "slop" that no one asked for from the trailer. |
Hate to break it to you, but the gaming community online is literally one of the worst communities to interact with. Look at the reactions to GoY or Intergalactic because of female leads. You think they won't be shitting on Horizon 3 lol?
And Sony did spend money under Jim Ryan to fund single player games like Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, Sons of Sparta, and Kena: Scars of Kosmora. The problem is the hardcore community is much harder to please than the average fan. The fact the Internet is willing to criticize publishers about layoffs or closures, but then root on multiplayer developers losing their jobs, is hypocritical and makes these kinds of discussions meaningless.
I could do the same with Santa Monica for instance, and root for them to fail because "they are creatively bankrupt and rely too much on God of War," or Insomniac because "they do so much Marvel slop." I guess it's alright to root for Marvel Tokon to fail because its live service slop served mixed with Marvel slop, and Arc System Works deserve to get shut down because of it. Sony also needs to consider shutting down Polyphony because they turned a traditional single player experience like Gran Turismo into live service slop. That's going to teach them!
