I *think* you can plug it directly into your internet connection w/o a router if you can manage to plug the ethernet into that given connection (reason I say this is that the 360 can search for your cable provider, and gain access using your password). I've seen that this is possible.
But at any rate, I've used my X360 in 1 of 2 ways to connect to XBL:
1) Take the Ethernet Cable and plug it into a router. Rather quick and easy
2) Plug Ethernet Cable into my Laptop, and use my Sprint Wireless Broadband to gain access from anywhere there's a power outlet and my wireless connection (which is most anywhere I live).
The X360 is rather versatile in how it can connect, imo.
