Thursday gaming news, part two:
'I told you so!': As Mewgenics roars past 250,000 copies sold in less than a day, Edmund McMillen says 'I knew this game would eventually see the light of day, and I knew it would be my best work'

The path to Mewgenics was a long one. It was revealed in 2012—yes, that's 14 years ago—and then delayed, and then cancelled outright. In 2018 Edmund McMillen announced that work had resumed, but instead of working with Team Meat partner Tommy Refenes, he was collaborating with Tyler Glaiel. A bit after that he warned that Mewgenics was still "a few years" away, and, well, eight years later, here we are.
Despite that long haul (or, maybe more likely, because of it), McMillen said in a new AMA on Reddit that finally getting Mewgenics out the door after all these years was a real moment of triumph—and one he never doubted.

Marvel Rivals' latest balance update continues to fan the flames of a broken meta: 'Today's patch notes have made me lose all hope'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/marvel-rivals-patch-notes-season-6-5/
NetEase finally spilt the beans on Marvel Rivals' Season 6.5 update yesterday, ahead of its launch on Friday, 13 February, giving us our first look at Elsa Bloodstone and all the balance changes. Of course, this was conveniently timed right as its competitor, Overwatch, launched its massive yearly refresh, which caused the game to break its player count record on Steam.
However, 'balance' isn't exactly the word I and many others would use to describe the latest patch notes, which continue to drop the ball that was already deep in the ground as far back as launch day.
I played the new demo for the upcoming Starship Troopers boomer shooter and accidentally wiped out 6 of my own guys when I bounced a grenade off someone's head

I sometimes have trouble keeping track of all the different Starship Troopers games out there, but the upcoming Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War stands out for a couple reasons. One, it's being made by Auroch Digital, developer of the very excellent Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, and two, there's now a demo on Steam so you can get into the bug hunt action (and take your first step toward citizenship) for free, right now.
Diablo 2 gets its first expansion in 25 years, featuring a new class, and finally, decent inventory management
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/diablo-2-is-coming-back-with-its-first-expansion-in-25-years-featuring-a-new-class-and-finally-decent-inventory-management/
I swore I heard the developers wrong on the Diablo 30th anniversary Spotlight video when they said that Diablo 2 would be getting a second expansion. Lord of Destruction came out 25 years ago; Diablo 2 is a really old game. Surely, they meant to say Diablo 4, the game that we already know is getting a second expansion this year.
Nope: I played it back, they really just announced a new Diablo 2 expansion called Reign of the Warlock, and made it available today. Diablo 2: Resurrected is also on Steam now.
>> More about Diablo 2: Diablo 2: Resurrected is on Steam and Steam Deck verified (link) and Blizzard says it's open to more Diablo 2 expansions and reworks (link).
Diablo 4's second new class is a summoner who commands demons to fight demons

The excitement around the return of paladins to Diablo 4 almost made me forget that a second class was still on its way. During today's Diablo Spotlight video, Blizzard reminded us that the Lord of Hatred expansion will launch with a second new class, one designed to contrast the bright and stalwart paladins.
Solasta 2 is committed to implementing a D&D 5E rule that Baldur's Gate 3 dismissed
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/solasta-2-is-committed-to-implementing-a-d-and-d-5e-rule-that-baldurs-gate-3-dismissed/
Solasta: Crown of the Magister was a more combat-focused take on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition than Baldur's Gate 3, and so it included a couple of tactical options that Larian's narrative-heavy RPG didn't. Dodge, for instance—an action that gives all attacks against you disadvantage and also gives you advantage on Dexterity saving throws—was an option in Solasta.
So was "ready action", which let you prepare an attack or cantrip to use on an enemy when they came into range. Basically, it was overwatch. In tabletop Dungeons & Dragons though, readying an action can be used for anything your heart desires ("I ready an action to feed my potion of healing to the paladin when they drop" or "I ready an action to push the boulder off the cliff when the ogre is beneath it," for instance), and while that level of freeform planning isn't realistic in a videogame, Solasta's designers want more options available in Solasta 2. As the developers at Tactical Adventures say in the latest dev update, "we aim to have most actions compatible with Ready Action over time."
16 days after Highguard's launch, the studio has laid off 'most of the staff'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/16-days-after-highguards-launch-the-studio-has-laid-off-most-of-the-staff/
Just before launch, Highguard devs told PC Gamer it wouldn't need huge player numbers to succeed.
Just over two weeks after releasing the "PvP raid shooter" Highguard on Steam, developer Wildlight Entertainment has reportedly laid off an unspecified but seemingly large number of employees.
Peter Molyneux's Masters of Albion looks like three games in one, but it also looks like none of them is any good
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/peter-molyneuxs-masters-of-albion-looks-like-three-games-in-one-but-it-also-looks-like-none-of-them-is-any-good/
Masters of Albion, the upcoming god-slash-action-slash-management game from Peter Molyneux's 22Cans, has a new six minute "epic deep dive" trailer showcasing what you'll be getting up to. And the perhaps unsurprising news is that none of it looks like much fun.
Please excuse my bad English.
