Palestinian envoy to UN condemns Israeli cabinet decision on West Bank
Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, says Israel’s recent move to cement control over the West Bank amounts to “the annexation of the land of the Palestinian people”.
“We are gathered here today in order to express our outrage and condemnation for what the Israeli cabinet decided,” Mansour said alongside the envoys of several Arab and Muslim-majority states at UN headquarters in New York.
Mansour said a letter has been circulating at the UN detailing the countries’ opposition to Israel’s measures.
“I gave it in person to the president of the Security Council yesterday,” the Palestinian envoy said, adding that he expects the council to “shoulder its responsibility” and pressure Israel to “reverse this illegal step”.
He added: “We hope and expect that the powerful partners … [will] stop Israel in its track[s], from getting away with this very violation of international law and the will of the entire community of nations.”
