[insert next-gen brown comment here]
Well, at least the sky and explosions aren't gray.

On one of the pictures there is a text box that reads:

Since all the screens here hail from one level, don't expect the netire game to look so...bleak. Some levels will highlight the "natural beauty" of helghan.

The originaly Killzone was much the same in it's variety of environments. The game started off in trenches on the outskirts of a city at dusk. The level had a somewhat dark and brown hue. Later on in the same drab city, you happen upon a beautiful park area that had yet to be destroyed by the surrouding battles. Later on in the game, you visit a green-ish swamp, a snowy mountain, and a metallic orbital station.

That sounds like Gears with the "Destroyed Beauty" theme.

Well, they say Killzone basically started the "dark and gritty" trend.   If nothing else, Killzone was praised for it's artstyle and atmosphere, and it wasn't until after all the Killzone hype that games like Gears, etc. started popping up.  Prior to Killzone we had shooters like Halo, Timesplitters, and Goldeney, and Perfect Dark.
