The primary effects of rescheduling should be on research and the marijuana industry. It would allow the marijuana industry to use certain tax breaks and potentially have more access to the banking system, and it will allow more research on marijuana to take place. Both of these things are good, in my opinion, but they do not directly result in any change when it comes to decriminalization. This is a small step, but an important one. Biden started these efforts when he formally started the process of rescheduling but I was disappointed that he didn't act with a stronger hand on the matter. But, I also think absent any additional moves regarding decriminalization, this may be just be another symptom of Trump's affinity for giving tax breaks to businesses, but we'll see. Either way, important step but a lot of work remains to be done. |
It seems like the long road to legalization has been a path of baby steps (polls and activism at first), and now we have had a major victory though not the ultimate one.
I'm still thankful because a step like this needs to be made before full legalization will happen.
