Personally, I was disappointed in various degrees with these sequels:

  • Kingdom Hearts II compared to Kingdom Hearts I (in some aspects)

I first started the series on PS4. Finished the first game but dropped the second after about 4-5 hours. The beginning just bored me to death and that ended my journey with the series. I see KH2 often regarded as the best online.

I have zero problems with the opening hours of KH2. I actually love that.

KH2 is great at what it does. I really like it. But the gameplay and level design was incredibly simplified compared to KH1 in favor of a more dynamic and engaging combat. Platforming sections/verticality? Gone. Worlds full of secrets? Gone. Interactivity with said worlds? Gone. Imaginative stories for Disney worlds that integrate them into the KH universe and make the KH characters integrate into them in return? This game is where they begin to be gone.

KH2 is still a great game, but it completely destroyed what made KH1 great in the first place. And things would only get worse in future games.
