However, that's exactly what happens. He goes from having some nightmares... to almost crying over helping to kill Mace to cutting up kids.

Then almost crying over helping to kill mace and then slaughtering little kids was same day... and silly.

 

That's not true - it wasn't as abrupt as you're making it out to be. You're completely omitting the time he waltzed into the sandpeople village and wiped them completely off the map...

 

That was waaaay before he was crying about almost killing Mace.

He goes from being sad about helping to kill someone he never really liked anyway to killing kids... within a day.
