Nations lack ‘political will and moral courage’ to hold Israel accountable for crimes: B’Tselem

The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem says the killing of two Palestinian men surrendering to Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank is just one of many deadly incidents that show total impunity by its armed forces.

“What we’re seeing again and again is that Israel is unwilling and unable to investigate itself. Every once [in] a while it is forced to do so due to international coverage in the media or pressure from other states,” public outreach director Shai Parnes told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv.

“But pretty much every time, the outcome is the same. The investigatory mechanism is actually a whitewash mechanism. And their goal is to pretend they’re investigating but to get the perpetrators total impunity.”

The most disturbing aspect is the total impunity given to Israel by the international community – Israel’s Western allies in particular – for the genocide in Gaza and ongoing attacks in the occupied West Bank, he added.

“What they’re lacking is the political will to act and the moral courage to act, and that’s really shameful,” said Parnes.

Palestine pleads ‘stop the Israeli killing machine’ in occupied West Bank

Palestine’s Foreign Ministry is demanding action from the international community to halt Israel’s “war crime” as it continues its large-scale military assault on the occupied West Bank.

The call comes after Israeli forces shot dead two unarmed Palestinian men after they surrendered in Jenin on Thursday night.

“The ministry calls on the international community – particularly the United Nations Security Council and international courts – to take immediate action to stop the Israeli killing machine, deter crimes, and impose urgent international protection mechanisms for the Palestinian people,” it said in a statement.

It called for international peacekeeping forces in the occupied territories, and the prosecution of Israel’s political and military leaders “as they are war criminals who must be held accountable under international law”.
