Belgium’s top diplomat ‘shocked’ by Israel’s extrajudicial killings in West Bank
Maxime Prevot, Belgium’s foreign minister, has condemned Israeli settler violence in the West Bank and the extrajudicial killing of two Palestinians by Israeli soldiers in the occupied territory’s Jenin city.
In a statement on social media, Prevot wrote he was “shocked” by “images showing Israeli soldiers cold-bloodedly shooting two surrendering civilians”, saying the incident violated international law.
“This violence must stop,” he added.
Foreign ministers from France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany denounced the “massive increase of settler violence” in the occupied West Bank in a joint statement yesterday.
Shocked that the images came out? The IDF shot their own hostages in Gaza while they were waving white flags...
Israeli soldiers behind Jenin killings should be tried for murder
The Israeli soldiers who carried out extrajudicial killings in the city of Jenin violated international law and should be tried for murder, an international legal expert has told Al Jazeera.
Neve Gordon, a professor of international and human rights law at Queen Mary University of London, said the fact that the two Palestinian men clearly surrendered – including lifting up their shirts and being forced to lie down in front of the soldiers – made them “protected people under international law” who should have been brought to court for any alleged offences – not killed.
“The soldiers should be arrested immediately, they should be investigated and there should be a trial for murder,” Gordon said.
But as the Israeli parliament pushes a bill that would introduce the death penalty for “terrorism” – which human rights groups say refers exclusively to Palestinians – its legal system has not been arresting or punishing soldiers, despite evidence of war crimes, Gordon added.
“There’s an environment of impunity, and the soldiers know that,” he said.
