That's how I got into Civilization in 1991! However as an alternative to Risk at the time, then the game inspired me to play the board game of Civilization. With 1830 it went the other way around, first the board game then later playing it on PC.
Which then led to many more tycoon games.
I could also say my interests in road / road building from an early age translated into games with track editors and Sim City style games. Which then even became my work, working on digital streetmaps and GPS navigation.
It also inspired me to recreate the town I live in in Cities in Motion 2

Then I solved the traffic issues in out town by adding a strategic extra bridge lol. The county actually later thought about adding a bridge in the same place but is now planning a bypass route for 2050 with an extra bridge over the river to the top left in the screenshot.
And now it has sort of become a historical map since after I completed that our town has been going through many changes, going from 11.7K population to targeted 24K for 2050. Some of the new construction is already visible in the map yet so much more has changed.
From gaming back to real life, I studied the Master plan, road to 2051 from our County and made a poster with all the information to visualize all the proposed changes. Maps are my hobby, hence exploration is my nr 1 in games, just wandering around mapping the terrain and routes.
