Al Jazeera cameraman shot and wounded by Israeli forces in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces have shot and wounded an Al Jazeera cameraman in Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank. Fadi Yassin sustained an injury to his foot and is being taken to hospital.

The Al Jazeera team was at the site covering a protest by Palestinians near the Nur Shams refugee camp, east of Tulkarem. Residents were demanding to be allowed to return to their homes following raids by Israeli forces.

A child has also been shot and wounded in the attack, medical sources told our team.
Four Palestinians have also been arrested by the Israeli military.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Yassin said he was covering a demonstration by Palestinians in the Nur Shams refugee camp, east of the city Tulkarem, when the shooting took place. “[They] were demonstrating to demand return to their homes,” he said. “After they were displaced 10 months ago, the refugees feel let down by everyone.”

Yassin said he had been standing to the side of the protest, filming with a colleague before going for some interviews. “A soldier was shooting in the air. He then aimed for my legs. The bullet entered my left leg and exited my right.”

Israeli forces injure protesters, Al Jazeera journalist near Nur Shams refugee camp

The incident happened near the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem. This is a camp that the Israeli army has taken over since the beginning of the year, dispossessing the entire population of the camp.

The families who have now been displaced for almost a year have been trying to go back to their homes. They’ve been stopped every time. This time was no different: the Israeli army attacked the families; they attacked the journalists involved in covering the protest as well.

They shot at and injured our cameraman and detained another cameraman who works for a different broadcaster. Other people were also injured, including a 12-year-old child who is suffering from shrapnel wounds to the neck.

The Israeli army has renewed the closure of the camp and has barred anyone from entering it and reclaiming their properties.

The buildings were in the village of Jalbun, 13km (8 miles) east of the city of Jenin, and were demolished under the pretext of lacking a permit, the team reported.
