To be honest, I think this may be the best option for Xbox given what's going on.
After how much they've messed up with the XOne and now the X/S, they have no chance to beat Sony in sales, and since devs will optimize (ha-ha) their games more for the console that will sell more units, having a piece of hardware that is only marginally better will not work to get the better experience.
Going with a more "boutique" machine, more expensive, but also noticeable more powerful than Sony's PS6 (and hopefully also capable of running PC games), may be their best strategy to stay in the console business while still wasting everyone's time with all the other stuff that has led them to be in this mess of a situation and few care about.
Who knows, they may even be able to sell the machine for a profit.
