No one dares to use the word 'gay' in my class in an ill reference. If they do after we have had our discussion, I have them write an apology letter to the class as they never know who may be gay in the class. It hurts very much hearing kids use these words in such ill reference these days (I was guilty at times as a kid too). When some bring up the idea that it is a choice I tell them what my cousin had told me (he is gay, as is his twin brother) "Why would I choose to be gay? To be treated the way I am by peers, by society, by my father?" It usually hits them pretty hard. OT: I have no issues with homosexuality in the least. It exists in nature and it exists in humanity. It's natural. To me, saying homosexuality is immoral is analogous to saying that people born left handed are immoral |
There was a time when being left handed was a bad thing (maybe not immoral) but teachers would force left-handed kids to write with their right hands and would hit them if they didn't. So I guess times change and someday people won't even think about homosexuality as something wrong too.
