Sony had the right console with the right hardware features at the right price with the right games at the right time... And that rolled into the PS2 era perfectly.
The only disruption Sony has ever had in the home console market was the 7th gen when Nintendo pushed motion controls which went viral... And Microsoft had the right hardware at the right price with the right games with some pretty awesome features for the time.
The only time Sony has struggled with gaming hardware was it's handheld division. - And that is why they have stuck around in the gaming-sphere, it just prints them money.
It also helps that Sony hasn't been afraid to change things up to fix shortcomings with their offerings. - I.E. Cost reductions with the PS3 in order to have the right pricing for mainstream appeal.
