UK decries ‘atrocious humanitarian crisis’ in Gaza as flotilla raided
The British government is “very concerned” about Israel’s interception of the flotilla, the Foreign Office says, adding it made clear to Israeli authorities the situation should be resolved safely.
“We are very concerned about the situation with the Sumud Flotilla, we are in touch with the families of a number of British nationals involved,” it said in a statement.
“The aid carried by the flotilla should be turned over to humanitarian organisations on the ground to be delivered safely into Gaza. It is the responsibility of the Israeli government to resolve the atrocious humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“That means immediately and unconditionally lifting restrictions on aid so that the UN and NGOs can deliver food, medicine, and other essentials to civilians in desperate need.”
Organisers of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is transporting medicine and food to Gaza, said earlier that Israeli navy forces stopped several of its boats, and they used “active aggression”.
Israel has ‘no authority nor sovereignty’ over Palestine’s waters
Palestine’s Foreign Ministry has condemned Israel’s “attack and aggression” against the Gaza aid flotilla after at least 21 boats were intercepted.
It said it’s “gravely concerned” about the safety of those on board and holds Israel responsible for their “security and wellbeing”.
“The State of Palestine recalls that the Global Sumud Flotilla is a peaceful and civilian-led initiative aimed at breaking Israel’s inhumane and illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip and put an end to Israel’s starvation policy and genocide, in accordance with international law,” the ministry said.
“The State of Palestine reiterates that Israel, whose occupation of Palestine was declared illegal by the International Court of Justice, has no authority nor sovereignty over Palestine’s territorial waters.”
The ministry commended the “courageous participants and their determination to break Israel’s siege and end its genocide”.
The State of Palestine condemns Israel’s attack and aggression against the Global Sumud Flotilla, in violation of international law and norms, including Convention on the Law of the Sea, other humanitarian principles, and the human rights of the participants on board.
