Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all have shareholders. These are the individuals that they are trying to please. The primary existence of all three is to make money, and they will use almost any means necessary to do so even at the expense of the social good. If one the aforementioned companies has earned people's "respect" its, in my opinion, due to good public relations rather than true integrity.
They all participate in some substantial charity work, and I try not to overlook this aspect. But, the skeptical side of me believes that the purposes of such work isn't due to philantrophy.
