They need to have APU with same memory bus as Strix Halo. One of the biggest boat anchors around improved APU performance is memory bandwith. Strix Halo has a 256-bit memory bus instead of typical 128-bit bus. Doubling the memory bandwidth would do wonders for performance. |
That would come with a marked increase in cost and board complexity.
AMD would be better of throwing more cache at the problem, which can be used for the CPU and GPU... They started that push with the A.I Max 395 chips to a degree in conjunction with a wider LPDDR5 interface to some impressive results... But those chips are expensive monsters with TDP starting at 45w.
A successor to the Z2 Extreme should have 8x Zen compact cores, 64MB of cache, 16+ RDNA4 CU's at a chunky clock with a 128bit memory interface running LPDDR5X at 8533Mhz offering 136GB/s of bandwidth which would be ideal for 1080P gaming.
