Riven has incredible atmosphere, thanks to the dream like visuals and music.

I played it together with a friend for large parts and we were both mesmerized, glued to the 19" monitor with the PC hooked up to my brand new surround system.

We sucked at the puzzles but couldn't stop wandering around. Animal noises puzzle was awesome but we didn't recognize most of the sounds lol.

Yeah, the whole Myst series is worth mentioning (and Riven is perhaps my least favorite of them, though I only like the fourth game better due story). I've been replaying them all along few years now, using a 32" TV - as back when I first played them it was on small monitor.

Also should mention the 90's Lucas adventures, to pick one Loom is the most beautiful of them.

Speaking of old adventure games, Mean Streets (first Tex Murphy game) is another great one. It was special experience for me because back then my first PC didn't even have sound card and this was the first game where I could hear characters speaking to me. (Aside Master System Populous opening to very blurry "welcome to Populous!") But it's not just that subjective experience, the game has beautiful colors and style and humor.
