Russia is wanting to drill for oil in the antartic, will be violating many treaties if it does this. However, I've looked at other content on russia's polar ambitions and this is the one region that they are doing very well in. They have 5k troops in the area, many ice cutting ships, and more than one base. All they need to do is bring their army in and start drilling.
