Gaza ‘in the most dangerous phase’ of war, NGO network chief says

Amjad Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGOs Network in Gaza, has told Al Jazeera Arabic that he fears the world will become inured to scenes of Israeli violence in the Strip.

“We are in the most dangerous phase since the beginning of the aggression against the Palestinian people,” he said. “We fear that the international community will adapt to scenes of children being killed and starved in the Gaza Strip and they will just remain as numbers on the news.”

Thousands of children in Gaza treated for malnutrition

More than 13,000 children in Gaza were admitted for treatment for malnutrition in July, UNICEF says.

In the first two weeks of August alone, another 7,200 children received treatment, the agency said.

UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said the figures highlight the impact of Israeli-induced famine and limited aid access on children in the blockaded enclave. The agency is scaling up efforts to provide nutrition and medical care despite severe shortages and restrictions, she added.

UNRWA warns of grave risks for Gaza’s most vulnerable

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has warned that older people, caregivers and persons with disabilities in Gaza are at “grave risk” during the ongoing Israeli siege and forced displacement campaign.

UNRWA said it has been unable to deliver supplies to the territory for more than six months, leaving more than 83 percent of those in need without crucial assistance.

“Amid the Israeli siege, destruction, displacement, and scarce supplies, access to essential services is failing the most vulnerable”, the agency said, calling for immediate action to protect lives.

Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s commissioner-general, said the agency has about 6,000 truckloads of supplies waiting in neighbouring Jordan and Egypt – enough for two months of provisions for all of Gaza.

“Only a ceasefire, along with massive and unimpeded humanitarian access, can reverse the looming famine”, he said.
