Gaza’s Ministry of Health says Israeli forces have killed at least 69 Palestinians and wounded 422 in Gaza over the past 24 hours. The ministry added that the total number of casualties of Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, has risen to 64,300 killed and 162,005 wounded.

  • Two people were killed and others were injured in a strike on a residential apartment building in central Gaza City.

Israeli forces kill multiple children in attacks on tents in Gaza

The Israeli military is targeting displaced Palestinian families living in tents or temporary shelters in Gaza City as it carries out its large-scale assault to seize the city.

In the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, Palestinians picked through the detritus of their shelters following an Israeli drone attack on Thursday. Several children were killed in the attack, including Maha Afana’s son and daughter.

“I checked on my son and I found him lying on his back with blood running down from his nose and bleeding from the back of his head. I started screaming and my brother came and took him from me,” she said. “Then I went back to check on my second child, my daughter Noor, and found that she was drenched in blood from her head to her feet.”

But when Palestinians flee Gaza City to other parts of the Strip, they also face Israeli attacks. Umm Nabil al-Aish lost her relatives in an attack on makeshift shelters in Nuseirat, central Gaza, on Thursday.

“They starve us, deprive us of water, displace us and kill our children, all while the world is watching,” she said.

Israel’s razing of Gaza City could take ‘months, if not more than a year’

The Israeli army expects that about 200,000 Palestinians of the population of nearly one million will remain in Gaza City even as Israel presses an offensive to seize control of the capital, and a total takeover and razing of the city could be a lengthy process, says Lorenzo Kamel, Professor of History at the University of Turin.

“A few officials in the Israeli army also pointed out that the demolition of Gaza City, above and below the ground, like it happened in [the levelled Gaza Cities of] Beit Hanoon and Rafah, could take months, if not more than a year,” he told Al Jazeera.

“[But] regardless of whether Hamas surrenders or not, [far right Israeli Minister Bezalel] Smotrich and other Israeli Ministers reiterated that Israel’s goal – the so-called voluntary mass expulsion and the permanent occupation of Gaza – won’t change,” he added.

“It’s quite easy to be very bold like Smotrich when you receive $13bn of weapons from Washington. Without those weapons, figures like Smotrich would be much more humble.”
