| Lightning08 said: Yeah, the fact that the 2.4 update bricked even one console is quite concerning though. We should at least be able to upgrade Sony's compulsory firmware updates without fear of our console bricking. I hold off on all future upgrades until they have been fully tested from now on. |
1 - from what I've read/seen reported no consoles we're bricked. Not by my definition anyway. In all cases the HDD could be formated if desired and normal service restored. Sony would appear to be happy to switch consoles for those less technical users who find this all too much to handle.
2 - Sony is perhaps the most open of the three current consoles, actually allowing you to install another OS for example, or to install custom maps/content for games like UT3. As a result it increases (the still small) chance of an issue with a new FW as it becomes harder to test the FW to cover all possible PS3 console states each user might have. This is just something that goes hand in hand with being open.
3 - The actual number of affected PS3s would appear very small, as in you probably had a better chance of being run over when outside that day than having your PS3 have an issue (which is why I pay more attention crossing a road than when updating FW...)
4 - Given the importance of this update with two major new features I think Sony did the right thing by taking it down, taking the inevitable lumps on the internet (I actually saw the term 'plagued with issues' on one site which was overstating things somewhat and shows the worrying lack of understanding of basic word definitions on the internet) and fixing it as quickly as they could
If you're really that worried about future updates I'd backup to an external HDD before each FW install. I do for any that bring major new features as its impossible for Sony to ensure 100% no problems due to open nature of PS3 and I accept that. The downside? I have so much stuff on my 260GB HDD that it takes 2 hours to backup now! The upside? My PS3 is only one restore away from all content, game saves, etc. being back in action.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
