Doctor at Nasser Medical Complex says ‘patients are now running away from the hospital in fear’

Dr Saber al-Asmar of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis has described the horror of Israeli air strikes that hit the medical complex.

“We were like everyone inside the hospital just doing our job with the very huge shortage of equipment, tools and medications. And, while everyone was doing their job, this huge strike came.”

He added that the attack struck while students, doctors and journalists were inside.

“The operation room, especially in the morning, it’s full of medical students, patients, doctors and nurses… They were taking classes, while the journalists were preparing themselves to report on what’s happening in Gaza’s hospitals.”

The doctor said the strikes left patients traumatised.

“I can see the fear and the horror in the faces of these patients who are supposed to be in a place where it is internationally protected.”

He warned that many are now too afraid to remain in the facility.

“Patients are just running away from the hospitals, because they are now scared of staying in the hospital.”

‘Israel wants to destroy all aspects of life in Gaza’

Gaza’s Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basal is demanding an “end to the targeting of medical facilities and the entry of supplies”.

“The [Israeli] occupation wants to destroy all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip for the citizens. The occupation is committing direct crimes in front of the world, in addition to the crime of starvation,” said Basal.

Death toll in Nasser Hospital attack rises to 20

The death toll in an Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital has risen to 20, the Palestinian Health Ministry announced.

“The [Israeli] occupation forces’ targeting of the hospital today and the killing of medical personnel, journalists, and civil defense personnel is a continuation of the systematic destruction of the health system and the continuation of genocide. It is a message of defiance to the entire world and to all values of humanity and justice,” it said in a statement.
