Rob Flaherty who worked on the Kamala Harris campaign has an interesting opinion piece on it.

Due to our current media ecosystem, these stories are extremely useful to the Republican party (and possibly other far-right parties). Even without a single elected democrat having talked about the ad or expressed outrage, republican influencers and media figures very effectively catapulted the outrage of 5-10 irrelevant Tik-Tokkers into being about “everything that’s wrong with the democratic party”. And suddenly everybody are talking about a jeans ad, discussing if it is offensive or not, instead of talking about a president who has been involved in human trafficking of underage girls for sex slavery.
We already got a fascist as president of the US, who is sending innocent people to concentration camps in foreign countries and supports ethnic cleansing of palestinians. There are enough real things to be discussing and be angry about, but the thing is, social media algorithms are engineered to make us focus on rubbish like this jeans ad.
