So I just finished Sonic Colours Ultimate the other day.
I've played a couple of 3D Sonic titles, but I felt this was easily the worst. It's a not an aesthetically pleasing game. But what I hate most is the inability to use the dpad (I couldn't find the option) and the jumping system.
The former is weird for me because I have no issue playing 2D or 3D platformers with the joystick, but the 2D sections in this game are horrid to play sometimes. The sections where you need to zip left and right while running on rails were annoying with a joystick too.
But what's worse is the jumping... the game has 3 levels of jumps:
1. a tap, 2. a hold for a higher jump and 3. a 2nd tap for a double jump. The problem with how this is implemented is that holding the jump feels like a double jump in it's own right based on the height of the jump and how the levels are designed.
it's hard to explain, but I spent more time fighting this jumping system then doing practically anything else in the game. It only 'clicked' so to speak like after 10 - 15 hours of game time. And even then, I was still making platforming mistakes.
I don't recommend this game to anyone. And I'm glad I am done with it.
