UN Security Council meeting on Gaza situation moved to Sunday: Reports
As we previously reported, the UN Security Council is set to hold a rare weekend session to discuss Israel’s recently announced decision to occupy Gaza City.
The session, previously scheduled for Saturday, is now slated for Sunday morning at 10am New York time (14:00 GMT), the Anadolu news agency reports, citing unnamed diplomatic sources.
The sources said the UK, Denmark, France, Greece and Slovenia all requested the emergency session.
All of the 15-member council – barring current chair Panama and the US – have endorsed the meeting.
Israeli chief of staff ‘furious’ over plan to take control of Gaza City: Report
The Israeli army’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, was said to be “furious” with Israeli ministers who voted for a plan to take control of Gaza City, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority has reported.
Zamir was quoted as saying that he did not intend to endanger the lives of the captives. The report also cited sources in the defence establishment who opposed the decision.
“We will achieve operational control in Gaza, and what after that? This is a disaster. This is Hamas’s preferred method of military action,” a source was quoted as saying.
The report says that the plan includes the isolation of Gaza City, the forced evacuation of more than a million people to new areas that need to be built and the establishment of 12 new food distribution sites – all by October 7 of this year. Once this is the first phase of the deal is achieved, the army will take control of the city, it added.
