AFAIK TSMC has increased the price of the N5/N4 nodes in the past few years, they're not that much cheaper than N3 ($16,000 vs. $20,000).

So in theory a ~300 mm² die in N3 would cost about the same as a ~350 mm² N4 one ( = 9070 XT) while having 10% more transistors and 10% higher clock rates at roughly the same power envelope. That should be enough for 5080 performance.

Again... in theory.

Ram is the other big cost, AMD can "get away" with a larger chip if it's using cheaper memory than nVidia and still achieving good results, we saw it this generation with AMD sticking with GDDR6 verses nVidia and the more expensive GDDR7.

TSMC having a monopoly on leading edge chip manufacturing is going to keep screwing entire industries over. We need Intel and Samsung to open up and compete to keep costs in check.
