Besides discs going bad as Zkuq pointed out, space can also be another reason. It's far less bulky to have a NAS or an HTPC with several drives than all those discs and cases.

Besides it's also easier to load 2, 3 or as many movies as you want in a laptop to watch them in long travels (assuming you're not driving, of course).
