Yep it certainly looks that way. The phrase "appropriate for a school setting" and her saying she was also barred from attending class had me think of dress code issues, but then they could have simply had her wear a jacket over top and let her give the speech.

This is indeed only driving a bigger wedge instead of celebrating diversity. Immigrants are just as eager to learn about the new culture they ended up in as UK born kids are interested in their peer's backgrounds.

The Union Jack is over 500 years old and used as clothing since the 60s. Also turning away traditional farm clothes and St Georges and Welsh flags is bizarre.

Immigration is up a lot in the UK in the last couple years. How much of that is 'uncontrolled' though. The UK is also dealing with an ageing population like many other Western countries, the baby boomers are getting old and subsequent generations are having fewer children later in life. UK natural population increase is projected to be in decline by 2035, and is mainly supported now by higher birth rates in immigrant families. (Mainly Pakistan and Bangladesh immigrants) The problem with pension schemes is that they are based on an ever increasing population. The young pay for the old and there are projections the retirement age would have to be raised to 71 by 2050.

It all contributes to changes in the society, and people are naturally fearful of change. Muslims are now making up 6.5% of the population, 15% in London. Here in Ontario it's 6.7% and 10.2% in Toronto. And what you want to do is introduce new comers to your culture, not be ashamed of it. Kneejerk reaction from the right to exclude vs kneejerk reaction from the Left to over represent.

How much is this new 'class' war being played up to divide the population and distract from the bigger issues though. Sustainability of pensions and elderly health care, living cost and housing crises, rising unemployment rate, climate change. Singling out immigration isn't helping, but that seems where the battle lines are being drawn.

Anyway it's different here. The school did have an indigenous people's day/project, but there it's very clear it's about those that inhabited the land before Canada and students were tasked with choosing a indigenous tribe and learning about them without shaming kids for Canada's colonial past. And no issues during graduation with what kids wanted to wear from Niqab to Sari to glittery dresses. (While the boys all wear ties and suits, why is that still a tradition) A lot of emphasis on celebrating diversity.

Anyway excluding Britain from diversity day is just beyond stupid, hence hard to believe. But it seems the school was that stupid and reached the total opposite of the intended effect.

It is uncontrolled immigration when UK trained doctors can't find jobs because they're competing with the entire world on the few jobs that are available. It is uncontrolled immigration if Wes Streating has to come out and say, okay, we're actually messed up here and we need to prioritise our own people, including our own doctors. it is uncontrolled immigration when many of those migrants don't work, claim benefits, don't speak the language, require more appointments and interpreters whenever they use public services. It is uncontrolled when we continue to get thousands upon thousands of migrants from a safe continent and countries like France and house them in expensive hotels. What are you fleeing from in France, really?

Keep in mind, those crossing the channel are mostly men, with no female partners to help with the population. It will be interesting really to see how many of them actually end up starting a family and go on contributing to the society, when they can't even speak the language, Guess what? Those 200,000 men that have crossed the channels will also need children of their own to help prop up the failing pension scheme. Years of record migration numbers, and we still have shortages in the same sectors that we always have had shortages in, because none of it is planned migration that is designed to help the country where it's needed but an easy fix for consumption-driven GDP while the standards of living continue to fall. We don't have governments that look after people. We have governments that look after big businesses and their interests.

I'm not blaming immigrants for wanting to come here. They should absolutely come here while the door is open and while it's possible for them to do so, they're not at fault for pursuing opportunities that are available to them, they are not responsible for any of the problems the country is facing.

But let's not fool ourselves. Everything is poorly run in this country. Everything is random, unplanned, uncontrolled, and needs to be rethought and started over, including the NHS. Why is it that we can't point out that immigration as well is unplanned and uncontrolled and random and is not designed in any way to be optimal for the country? Nothing is after all. We're just meant to sit here and pretend that actually we can handle all these numbers, and pretend we have a plan for them. And we will succeed at integrating them into society. And we will be able to build schools and hospitals and clinics to look after them and after our own people at the same time when it doesn't seem like we're succeeding at anything, even after giving Labour an overwhelming majority that they're doing everything in their power to lose.

If Keir Starmer comes out tomorrow and says, we're going to get a million migrants this year to help us build home; builders, plumbers, electricians, just to fix the housing crisis, we will do what the Gulf states have done, to build all these stadiums in a small number of years and make life better for everyone in this country, the natives and the migrants. Do you think immigration will be met with the same negativity it is met with now? but that will never happen because fixing the housing crisis means making the ultra rich slightly less richer and we all know we can't have that.

As for people being fearful of change, to be honest, they should be. I do not want to celebrate diversity in which huge subset of the society is teaching young girls that they should cover up and wear the hijab. To me, the hijab is not a symbol of diversity. It's a symbol of oppression, The left doesn't want to see this because they have hamstrung their brains with a made-up term that is Islamophobia, all ideologies are phobic to each other, and certain religions in particular deserve to be perceived with skepticism and fear; this includes all the Abrahamic religions. Islam always gets treated with kids' gloves because fuck knows. Let's see what's going to happen to the LGBT community years down the line when this societal change that the left perceives as a benign one takes hold of more cities, when politicians will be forced to appease to the religious to win elections.
