NEW: In March, Xbox boss Phil Spencer was so impressed by the demo of a Zenimax game codenamed Blackbird that Matt Booty had to tell him to stop playing so the meeting could continue. Yesterday, they canceled it.

It's always tempting to glamorize canceled games, but this one came as a huge shock to the hundreds of Zenimax Online Studios employees working on it. I've seen footage of the vertical slice: It was slick and impressive, with a lot of mobility mechanics that looked like a lot of fun
