It's the replacement of the slim consoles.
Can't make em smaller anymore, add some more disk space, better screen / battery life, better gpu or whatever to sell more.
The revisions / upgrades sell, therefore they get made. It's just as 'necessary' as upgrading your phone or GPU every year / 2 years.
