Thanks for setting up this topic. Here’s my position: it’s not a matter of faith vs. science. It’s a matter of faith vs. faith. Atheism is a faith (or religion) in the same way Christianity is. If you think about religion as a “worldview” that seeks to explain life’s key questions (where did we come from?, what is our purpose on earth?, what happens when we die?), then atheism fits the bill. It’s the opposite of theism (in my case, evangelical Christianity).
Science is not a religion or worldview - it’s just a tool. And both atheists and theists use that tool, along with other tools (such as logic, probability, mathematics & common sense, among others), to seek answers to life’s questions. Last time I checked, neither the atheist nor the theist was alive when the universe began. And neither the atheist nor the theist was alive when the first life began. So we both have “faith” that our worldview is correct. The difference is - I believe the Christian worldview represents a “reasonable” faith. The atheist worldview represents an “unreasonable” faith.
There are lots of supporting arguments I could use. But I will focus on one: there is absolutely NO way, in my opinion, that the incredible complexity of the human body could have come about on its own. Science teaches us how astonishingly complex the human body is, even at the cellular level. There are as many as 50 trillion cells in the human body. And each cell contains as many as 100 trillion atoms. And they work together with incredible precision, like a miniature city. And DNA is this amazing atomic language. There is absolutely no way that could have come about on its own through time & chance, Please - a simple binder clip couldn’t even create itself in a billion years! How much less a body? The human body begs for a brilliant, genius, all-powerful Creator. And atheists like Richard Dawkins know this. That’s why they come up with silly, desperate ideas like “aliens seeded the planet.” They’re just replacing “God” with “aliens,” but who created the aliens?
I’m sorry, but atheism is a desperate religion that makes no sense. Atheists accuse Christians of being anti-science, but atheists are the ones who are anti-science. Science brings me, as a Christian, closer to God, because I can see how amazing He is? Atheists have to throw their brains in the trash can and ignore the obvious “fingerprint” of God in His creation of human life, other forms of life, the universe, and all of its amazing properties that we have discovered & have yet to discover!
Truth be told, all of the atheists I have ever met have not really taken the time to think about whether what they believe is actually true & makes sense. Rather, they quickly adopt it, because they love the fact that they can live their life with moral impunity, and they use it as a “coping mechanism,” so they don’t have to worry about a divine judgment in the afterlife (even though it will happen, & they will be condemned to hell for all of eternity). They can sleep with whomever they want. They can put whatever chemicals they want into their body. And they can have all of the fun they want. It”s basically “sex, drugs, and rock & roll” with no one to tell them “no.” They make themselves the “lord of their life.”
There are really only two religions out there - you either make Jesus Christ your Lord & Savior, or you make yourself your lord & savior. That’s it. Atheists have made their choice, and I pray for them, because I truly care about them & love them. And God loves them, too. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9). And “Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:11-12).
