We are in a dangerous escalatory spiral

Israel is classifying its attacks on Iran as preemptive, claiming Iran was on the verge of being able to produce a nuclear weapon in violation of its international commitments, and so its attacks are legitimate, Robert Hamilton, head of Eurasia Research at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, tells Al Jazeera.

“The problem is the incentive now from the Iranian side is to go all out toward a nuclear weapon, because, the experience of the last years seeping into people’s minds in Tehran is, the only way to deter or prevent these attacks is to be a nuclear power and to threaten the nuclear response” he said.

“So we’re in this… very dangerous escalatory spiral … where the incentive on the Israeli part is to continue the strikes until the program is completely destroyed,” he said, adding that on the Iranian side, the incentive is to “find a means to damage or hurt Israel”

In the long run, he said Tehran could become “doubly convinced” that developing nuclear capability is its only “real protection”.
