Severance: Blade of Darkness (AKA Blade of Darkness, AKA Blade: The Edge of Darkness)

Action-adventure from 2001 with 4 different starting character/classes, proto-Souls so to speak, albeit without respawn mechanics, but with similar approach to level design, dark atmosphere, stamina based combat, breaking shields, chopping off hands and legs (then picking them up to bash the enemy with them), enemies accidentally hitting each other, and generally extremely engaging combat.

I've only played original, with keyboard commands, not easiest to master, but once you do, you can pull off some spectacular things. I have to try re-release, to see how it translates to gamepad.

Studio behind Metroid Dread, which was founded by folks who made Blade of Darkness, is currently working on a sort of spiritual successor, Blades of Fire.

Of course, this can't go without mentioning Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, the game that made a template for stealth oriented real time squad based tactics.
