Turning to Spain for this thread. Quite an interesting country, gaming-wise. Not a super power like Sweden or France, but has had a decent amount of huge titles, certainly more so than Italy. They also got a blooming indie scene, which made it very difficult for me to cover everything, please fill me in on notable omissions.

Some notable Spanish developers and their games:

Pyro Studios

The unfortunately defunct Pyro Studios was specialized in real-time tactic games. Most popular are the Commandos games, but also Praetorians and Imperial Glory have a fanbase.

Notable games:

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

Commandos 2: Men of Courage

Commandos 3: Destination Berlin

Praetorians

Imperial Glory

MercurySteam

After making the action-adventure game Scrapland and the horror tile Clive Barker’s Jericho, MercurySteam caught the eyes of one Japanese giant, Konami, bringing their Castlevania franchise successfully into 3D with Lords of Shadow, to general acclaim, the 3DS sequel Mirror of Fate was also mostly well received, while the more ambitious home console sequel, Lords of Shadow 2 was critically panned. Their ability to craft metroidvanias was not a fluke though, they wanted to prove themselves by making a title in the franchise that gives its name to the genre, hence they pitched Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of the second Metroid title, to Nintendo, which allowed them to make the remake for 3DS. Delivering well on that promise, they got the chance to develop the much more ambitious original Metroid Dread for Switch, which is by many considered one of the systems quintessential titles, and a cornerstone in the series.

Notable games:

American McGee Presents: Scrapland

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate

Metroid: Samus Returns

Metroid Dread

The Game Kitchen

Another Metroidvania developer, known for the two Blasphemous games, which also take inspiration from From Softwares Dark Souls series. Blasphemous is absolutely dripping with atmosphere, relying on Spanish culture and catholic symbolism. The Game Kitchen then went on to develop the strategy stealth game The Stone of Madness, who would have thought?

Notable games:

Blasphemous

Blasphemous 2

The Stone of Madness

Gameloft Barcelona

They have been handling some of the titles in the acclaimed arcade racer series Asphalt, in particular the most praised among them, Asphalt 8.

Notable games:

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline

Asphalt 8: Airborne

Tequila Works

An indie game developer, who had their debut with the unique, although divisive Deadlight. They really rose to prominence with the puzzle games The Sexy Brutale and especially Rime. Song of Nunu, a platformer starring a character from League of Legends also received some praise.

Notable games:

Deadlight

The Sexy Brutale

Rime

The Song of Nunu

Nomada Studio

When Gris came out in 2018, it was almost an indie sensation, the game got compared to the classic Journey (2012) in it’s atmosphere, gameplay-focused dialogue-free storytelling. A true gem. Nomada Studio’s recent game Neva follows the same template, but is much more ambitious in the scope, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it also ends up as a classic.

Notable games:

Gris

Neva

Other games to consider:

Temtem

Aragami

Severance: Blade of Darkness

World Rally

Snow Wave: Avalanche

Igor: Objective Uikokahonia

Runaway: A Road Adventure

Moonlighter
