Hamas says new Gaza ceasefire talks with Israel under way in Doha: Report

Reuters is quoting Hamas official Taher al-Nono as saying that a new round of Gaza ceasefire talks with Israel is currently under way in Qatar, which has been acting as a mediator in the war.

Al-Nono said both sides in Doha were discussing all issues without “pre-conditions”, according to the news agency’s report.

‘Enough with the attacks,’ Italian foreign minister tells Israel

Antonio Tajani has called on Israel to stop its deadly attacks on Gaza, after the Israeli military’s announcement of a new offensive on the besieged territory.

“Enough with the attacks,” the Italian foreign minister said during a trip to Sicily, in remarks relayed by his spokesman.

“We no longer want to see the Palestinian people suffer,” Tajani said. “Let’s come to a ceasefire, let’s free the hostages, but let’s leave people who are victims of Hamas alone,” he was quoted as saying.

‘There is a sea change in public opinion’

Diana Buttu, a Palestinian human rights lawyer and analyst, says Trump’s trip to the Middle East this week had nothing to do with Palestine.

“I say this because, since the start of his presidency, he has let Netanyahu do whatever it is that he wants to do,” Buttu told Al Jazeera.

The US provides at least $3.8bn in military assistance to Israel annually, and it has provided billions more since the Israeli military launched its offensive in Gaza in 2023. Washington also continues to provide unwavering diplomatic and political support to its ally.

But after 19 months of death and destruction in Gaza, Buttu noted, “the world has awoken” to what is happening, and is calling for it to end.

“We’ve seen that the Financial Times came out with its editorial, calling for an end to the policy of starvation. The Guardian has been publishing pieces similarly. The Economist doing the same,” she said.

“There is a sea change in public opinion. It’s just so tragic to me that it took this much destruction, so many people being killed, for the world to finally wake up.
